1.Indian Railways to launch WiFi facilities at a minimum of 2,000 stations
Railway Minister Piyush Goyal instructed officials
to provide WiFi facilities at a minimum of 2,000 stations as soon as possible.
He also called for setting up a single helpline number for all non-security
railway complaints by the end of January. Additionally, Point of Sale (PoS)
machines will be distributed in all trains to each catering staffer by March 31
to address complaints related to overcharging by the caterer. The government
will also replace conventional coaches with modern Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB)
design coaches in all long distance trains.
2.Centre approved Centre for Classical Language at Tirur
The Union Ministry of Human Resource Development
approved the establishment of a Centre for Classical Language at the Thunchath
Ezhuthachan Malayalam University, Tirur, Kerala. The Ministry has communicated
the decision to the Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysuru. It is said
that the State government would be required to prepare a detailed project
report and sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry. The proposed
centre would spur the development of Malayalam language and help the Malayalam
university also.
3.Ajay Maken, AICC partys Delhi unit president, resigned his position
Ajay Maken, Senior Congress leader and former Union
Minister, stepped down as the All India Congress Committee
(AICC) party’s Delhi unit president. He cited the health-related issues as
the reason for his resignation. P.C. Chacko, AICC in-charge of the Delhi unit,
confirmed Mr. Maken’s resignation. The party is looking for a successor to
replace his position. former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and former
Delhi Minister Yoganand Shastri are being considered as his replacements
4.Government says no decision regarding Rs 2,000 note production recently
The union government clarified that there has been
no decision recently regarding the production of the 2000 rupees notes.
Economic Affairs Secretary Subhash Chandra Garg the printing of notes is
planned as per the projected requirement. The country more than adequate
such notes in the system with over 35 percent of them by value in circulation.
5. PM Narendra Modi to inaugurate 8 projects in Manipur
During his visit to Manipur, Prime Minister Narendra
Modi is to inaugurate 8 projects and lay the foundation stone for 4 new
schemes. The projects include the integrated check post in Tengnoupal district,
Dolaithabi Barrage project of Imphal East district, FCI food storage godown in
Imphal East district and the Buffer water reservoirs in Ukhrul district. PM
Modi will also inaugurate improved and upgraded water supply for Churachandpur
zone, eco-tourism complex at Thangapat in Kangpokpi district, an integrated
tourist destination in Noney district and the water supply scheme at JNV,
Lambui and its surrounding villages. He will lay the foundation stone for four
projects that include Infrastructure development of Dhanamanjuri University in
Imphal West district, flood lighting of hockey stadium and the main stadium at
the Khuman Lampak Sports Complex in Imphal East district and AstroTurf laying
in Langjing Achouba of Imphal West district. Security measures have been
tightened in the entire state in view of the prime minister's visit.
6. Pujara faces 1258 balls in Australia series, breaks Dravids record
30 years old Indian Batsman, Cheteshwar Pujara faced
1258 balls in the ongoing test series so far against Australia to become the
batsman who had faced highest deliveries in a test series in Australia beating
India’s Former Captain, Rahul Dravid’s record of 1203 balls.
7. Rishabh Pant 1st ever Indian wicketkeeper to slam Test ton in Australia
India’s wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant became the first
Indian wicketkeeper-batsman to score a century in Test against Australia on
Australian soil after hitting 159 runs on the 2nd day of 4th Test Match at
Sydney, Australia. Rishabh pant broke Farokh Engineer’s record of highest Test
runs against Australia on Australian soil. Farokh Engineer scored 89 runs in
1967.
8. Climate warming shows its impact on Oysters
Climate change took a toll on French oyster
farmers. Oyster farmer’s along France’s Emerald Coast said that the long
drought in France took a heavy toll, leading to smaller harvests. Cold weather
normally encourages a needed rest for oysters to mature. But this winter has so
far been unusually warm and, paradoxically, too rainy. Rains may bring minerals
that favour plankton growth, but they also mean the molluscs spend too much
energy eating. As winters get warmer and summers drier many Oyster
growers worry there will soon be fewer of the molluscs to go around. In 2017,
the roughly 4,500 oyster growers in France sold 1,00,000 tonnes. CNC national
shellfish
producer’s association reported that the Oyster farmers will see volumes down
by 20 to 30% in 2019. It also said that Climate warming is starting to have an
impact on Oysters.
9. PayU India CEO Amrish Rau joined parent company Naspers as head of financial technology
PayU India’s CEO Amrish Rau joined as the head of
financial technology partnerships and investments for Naspers’ fin tech
business. Nasper is South African parent of PayU. Rau will continue to report
to Laurent le Moal the chief executive of PayU, which is headquartered in the
Netherlands.
10. Vivek Bhatia appointed as MD & CEO of Thyssenkrupp Industries India
Thyssenkrupp, the German industrial giant, appointed
Vivek Bhatia as the Managing Director (MD) & Chief Executive Officer (CEO)
of Thyssenkrupp Industries India. Mr.Bhatia was earlier the CEO - Asia Pacific
at Thyssenkrupp AG, driving group activities for all Thyssenkrupp companies in
the region. Prior to joining Thyssenkrupp, Mr. Bhatia was earlier with Boston
Consulting Group, India.
11. Parliament passed the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (Amendment) Bill
Parliament following the approval from the
Rajya-Sabha passed a bill to provide retrospective recognition to central and
state government funded institutions offering B.Ed and related courses that are
not recognized under the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) Act..
The NCTE (Amendment) Bill which will be a one-time measure would help over
17,000 students who have obtained B.Ed degrees from those institutions which do
not have NCTE approval for the course under the 1993 law. 23 state and central
universities and colleges offering B.Ed courses were found not recognized by
the Council. The government would ensure that the quality of institutes
offering B.Ed courses is maintained and proposes to start an integrated course
in B.ED as in Law and other courses from 2020.
12. Govt launches Green-Ag, GEF-assisted project, in partnership with FAO
The Minister of State for Agriculture & Farmers Welfare
Shri Parshottam Rupala informed that the Government had launched a Global
Environment Facility (GEF) assisted project namely, “Green – Ag: Transforming
Indian Agriculture for global environmental benefits and the conservation of
critical biodiversity and forest landscapes” in collaboration with the Food and
Agriculture Organisation (FAO) during September 2018. The project was launched
in high-conservation-value landscapes of five States namely (i) Madhya Pradesh:
Chambal Landscape, (ii) Mizoram: Dampa Landscape, (iii) Odisha: Similipal
Landscape, (iv)Rajasthan: Desert National Park Landscape and v) Uttarakhand:
Corbett-Rajaji Landscape. The project is aimed to mainstream biodiversity,
climate change, and sustainable land management objectives and practices into
Indian agriculture. Besides this, it is also supposed to catalyze a
transformative change of India’s agricultural sector to support the achievement
of national and global environmental benefits and conservation of critical
biodiversity and forest landscapes.
13. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated 12 projects worth over Rs. 1500 crore on his one-day visit to Imphal, Manipur

to Imphal, Manipur, he inaugurated 12 projects worth over Rs. 1500 crore. The
12 projects consisting of eight key development projects related to water
supply and tourism and four schemes in Manipur. These include: An
Integrated Check Post at Moreh, Imphal, at a cost of over Rs. 125 crores, that
will facilitate customs clearance, foreign currency exchange, immigration
clearance. the Dolaithabi Barrage Project which completed at a total cost of
Rs. 500 crore, the FCI Food Storage Godown at Sawombung that had begun in
December 2016, He dedicated to the nation the 400 kV Double Circuit
Silchar-Imphal Line that was made at a cost of Rs. 700 crore. A buffer water
reservoir at Ukhrul was mentioned which would be helping the citizens till
2035. He inaugurated improved and upgraded water supply for Churachandpur zone
which will help the citizens till 2031.
14. SCCL, the public sector miner, launched social media wall
Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL), a
public sector miner, launched the social media wall on the YouTube Channel
Singareni Siren, Facebook application, Instagram and Twitter handles, all at
one place. It aims at bringing together all the social media applications
introduced to disseminate information on the developments. The application
would incorporate information pertaining to coal production, transport and details
of power generation by the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC)-run plants
in addition to welfare activities taken up by the company for the employees as

15. Global Healthcare Summit 2019 to be held in Hyderabad
The 13th edition of Global Healthcare Summit 2019 is
to be held in Hyderabad from July 21 to 24. The summit is organized in
partnership with the Global Association of Physicians of Indian Origin. The
organizing chapters of the conference include Osmania, Gandhi, Kakatiya and
Telangana Medical alumni, Association of Telugu Medical Graduates of the
U.S.A., Gandhi Medical College Global Alliance, and Kakatiya Medical College
Old Students’ Association. More than 500 physicians are expected to attend the
summit. The summit would have an international research competition for which
the American Association of Physicians with Indian Origin (AAPI) would work in
collaboration with a leading academic medical college in Hyderabad.
16. National Boxing Championships: Lovlina Borgohain moves into quarter-finals
In the Women's National Boxing Championships,
Lovlina Borgohain entered the quarter-finals owing to a walkover as pugilists
from Haryana and Kerala impressed in Vijayanagara. Four of Kerala boxers Divya
Ganesh (69 kg), Indira KA (75kg), Anaswara PM (81kg), and Fousiya AT (81kg)
entered the quarter-finals along with four boxers from Haryana.
