1. Three astronauts return from International Space Station
Three astronauts have returned to Earth after more
than six months aboard the International Space Station. A Russian Soyuz
capsule carrying Serena Aunon-Chancellor of NASA, Sergey Prokopyev from Russia
and German astronaut Alexander Gerst of the European Space Agency landed on the
snow-covered steppes in Kazakhstan. Russian rescue teams in helicopters
and all-terrain vehicles rushed to the landing site to extract the astronauts
from the capsule charred by a fiery ride through the atmosphere. The trio spent
197 days in space.
2. India to host the first ever India China Film Festival strengthening the cultural understanding amidst
A three day India China Film Festival is set to
begin in New Delhi from 22nd of December this year culminating on 24th of
December. In order to strengthen and deepen cultural understanding between the
two countries, the film festival is being organized during the first
India-China High-Level Mechanism on Cultural and People-to-People Exchanges.
Jackie Chan's 2012 action movie "CZ12" will open the India-China Film
Festival here. The three-day Festival will be organized at Siri Fort Auditorium
II, New Delhi by the Directorate of Film Festivals, Ministry of Information
& Broadcasting and the Indian Government. The duo cultural and
people-to-people exchanges will probably be encouraged by way of this
initiative. A total of seven films including four Chinese and three Indian
Films will be screened during the Festival. The opening film of the Festival
will be ‘CZ12’ also known as ‘Chinese Zodiac’.
3. 150 crores relief to onion growers in Maharashtra
The Maharashtra cabinet approved an ex-gratia
payment of Rs 200 per quintal rate for onions sold between November 1 to
December 15. Rs 150 crore compensation comes as a big relief to the onion
producing farmers who had to sell their produce at low prices. The
compensation will cover a total of 75 lakh metric tons of onions.
4. Union Government Launches Asiatic Lion Conservation Project
The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and
Climate Change launched the “Asiatic Lion Conservation Project” to protect and
conserve the population of Asiatic Lion and its associated ecosystem. The
Asiatic Lion Conservation Project is aimed at the conservation and recovery of
Asiatic Lion with the help of up to date techniques, instruments, regular
scientific research studies, disease management, modern surveillance and
patrolling techniques.
5. NFAI and FTII Sign MoU For Transfer of Land
National Film Archive of India (NFAI) and Film &
Television Institute of India (FTII) signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)
for transfer of three acres of land for the construction of storage facility
for films and film material. The land belonging to FTII at their Kothrud campus
in Pune will be transferred to NFAI for this purpose.
6. Centre might infuse Rs.2,345 crore more in Air India
The Centre has sought Parliament’s approval for an
additional equity infusion of Rs.2,345 crore for debt-laden Air India (AI) and
a separate sum of Rs.1,300 crore for a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) which
houses the national carrier’s debt and non-core assets. The SPV, Air
India Assets Holding, comprises Rs.29,000 crore of the Rs.55,000 crore debt of
AI and the airline’s non-core assets such as the ground-handling arm and land.
The purpose is to liquidate the assets and pay off the debt parked in the SPV.
It had already provided a sovereign guarantee to enable AI to raise
Rs.2,000 crore from banks, which the airline has availed. The airline had also
raised Rs. 1,000 crore from the National Small Savings Fund.
7. Government approved Mahindras Rs.1,900 crore tourism plan
The Maharashtra State government has approved a film-centric
entertainment destination to be developed by the Mahindra Group in Kandivali,
with an investment of Rs.1,900 crore in Mumbai. According to a recent
Government Resolution (GR), the Bollywood theme-based tourism project will be
developed on 82,950.5 sq.m. belonging to the Mahindra Group. Earlier this year,
a high-powered government committee accorded it the ultra mega project status.
As per the State tourism policy of 2016, an ultra mega project would require a
capital investment of Rs.500 crore, would have to employ 750 people, and have
to be completed in 84 months. The GR said the Mahindra project fulfills the
criteria.
8. Genetically Modified plant that cleans indoor air
Researchers have Genetically Modified (GM) a common
indoor plant, golden pothos or Devil’s ivy (Epipremnum aureum), to remove
pollutants inside the house. It has been modified to produce a liver
enzyme called cytochrome p450 2e1, which is taken from rabbits, that
breaks down a wide range of pollutants. The researchers put the modified plant
and normal pothos ivy in glass tubes and added either benzene or chloroform gas
into each tube. They found that the concentration of either gas did not change
for normal plants. However, for the modified plants, the concentration of
chloroform dropped by 82%, and it was almost undetectable by day six.
9. Tripura government plans fresh literacy survey
The Tripura government has planned to conduct a
fresh survey on the literacy rate in the State. A survey conducted in 2014 had
recorded 95% literacy rate in the State. This survey was conducted by the

10. CMRL to launch mobile app to book a ride
Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is to soon offer
its commuters a facility to book a ride through its mobile app, for travelling
to areas around stations. For this project, CMRL has tied up with a firm to
offer the service. The firm’s icon for this service will be created in the
Chennai Metro Rail mobile app and when commuters touch the icon, it will direct
them to the firm’s vehicle booking page and they can hire a car.
11. USA pulls out of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty
Russia has confirmed that the United States of
America has decided to cancel the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF)
Treaty, which was signed between Russian and the USA in 1987. The USA had
already announced the withdrawal decision from the INF treaty in October 2018.
The INF Treaty was signed in 1987 between US President Ronald Reagan and USSR
President Mikhail Gorbachev. The INF treaty banned the development, testing and
possession of short and medium-range ground-launched nuclear missiles having
range between 500-5,000 km.
12. Haryana Govt launched mobile app 'Shiksha Setu'
To help students, Haryana Government has started
mobile app ‘Shiksha Setu’ which would have all information related to
attendance, fee, online admission and scholarships in all government colleges
of the state besides having details of lecturers of government colleges and
officers of the Directorate.
13. Famous classical singer Pandit Arun Bhaduri passed away at 75
Pandit Bhaduri was considered to be one of the
masters of Bengali songs and bhajans. The veteran singer had served as a guru
(teacher) at the ITC Sangeet Research Academy, and was a top radio and
television artiste. Pandit Bhaduri was trained in Indian music by Md A Daud and
Md Sagiruddin Khan.
14. Merriam-Webster selects 'Justice' as its 2018 Word of the Year
Merriam Webster chooses its word of the year based
on an increase in traffic and overall volume of traffic. They report “justice”
saw a 74 percent increase year over year, taking it higher than other words
that might have been “trendy” or “buzzed about.” The word follows
"toxic," picked by Oxford Dictionaries, and "misinformation,"
plucked by Dictionary.com.
15. Government authorised 10 agencies to snoop on your computer
Home Secretary Rajiv Gauba has issued an order to 10
central agencies, authorising them to intercept, monitor and decrypt any
"information generated, transmitted, received or stored in any
computer". The 10 central agencies include: ♦ Intelligence Bureau, ♦
Narcotics Control Bureau, ♦ National Investigation Agency, ♦ Enforcement
Directorate, ♦ Central Board of Direct Taxes, ♦ Directorate of Revenue
Intelligence, ♦ Central Bureau of Investigation, ♦ Cabinet Secretariat
(R&AW), ♦ Directorate of Signal Intelligence (For service areas of Jammu
& Kashmir, North-East and Assam only) and ♦ Commissioner of Police.
