1. Fresh bill introduced in Lok Sabha to make triple talaq penal offence
The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage)
Bill, 2018, commonly known as the Triple Talaq Bill, was introduced in the Lok
Sabha on December 17. Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad introduced the
Bill, despite opposition from Congress member Shashi Tharoor. Under the
proposed law, giving instant triple talaq will be illegal and void and
will attract a jail term of three years for the husband. The introduced bill
seeks to replace the Triple Talaq ordinance that was passed by the government
in September 19.
2. Star India chairman Uday Shankar elected Vice President of FICCI
Uday Shankar is the first ever Indian media
and entertainment executive to assume the leadership position in a national
industry chamber - The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry
(FICCI). Shankar entered media as a political journalist with The Times of
India and rose to become the CEO and editor of 'Star News'. He spearheaded the
launch of 24-hour Hindi news channel 'Aaj Tak' in 2000, and 'Headlines Today'
in English in 2003, as editor and news director of 'TV Today' Group.
3. Global telecom to set up research centre in Bengaluru
Global telecom, British Telecommunications giant,
said it plans to set up a research centre in Bengaluru in partnership with the
Indian Institute of Science. The British Telecom Indian Research Centre will
focus on the development of artificial intelligence, mobility and
cyber-security technologies for use in the company’s programmes, products, and
services. The India centre’s structure and organization will follow a
model used for the British firm’s global research locations, combining
academic, industry and government partnerships. It will join BT’s network of
collaborative research facilities in China, Northern Ireland, the UAE, and the
US.
4. Tamil Nadu CM launched ISRO designed NaVIC to fishermen
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami
launched the distribution of satellite phones to fishermen involved in deep sea
fishing. It will assist the fishermen in their navigation while in the high
seas. The satellite phones, NaVIC (Indian Regional Navigation Satellite
System) receivers, has been designed by the Indian Space Research Organisation
(ISRO) as a bid to the fishermen. So far, ISRO has delivered 200 NaVICs to the
State government.
5. Cabinet approved the expansion of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana
The Union Cabinet approved the expansion of the
Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana. The scheme aims at providing deposit-free LPG
connections to eight crore households. So far, the scheme targeted the poor and
underprivileged so listed in the Socio-Economic and Caste Census, 2011.
6. Andreas Goss is appointed as CEO of Thyssenkrupp Tata Steel B.V
Andreas Goss is appointed as the Chief Executive
Officer (CEO) of Thyssenkrupp Tata Steel B.V., the proposed joint venture (JV)
between Tata Steel and Thyssenkrupp. Mr.Goss is currently the CEO of
Thyssenkrupp’s steel division. He would chair the management board of
Thyssenkrupp Tata Steel B.V. Hans Fischer who is now the CEO of Tata Steel
Europe would be the deputy CEO and chief technology officer of the JV Tata
Steel and Thyssenkrupp had also decided on the members of the future management
board for the JV to be headquartered in Amsterdam.
7. Denmark's Foreign Affairs Minister Anders Samuelsen arrives on two-day visit to India
External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Foreign
Affairs Minister of Denmark Anders Samuelsen on December 17 co-chaired the 2nd
session of Joint Commission Meeting in New Delhi. Both the leaders took stock
of the ties and identified cooperation in renewable energy, agriculture, food
processing, shipping, Smart Cities, digitization and culture. Mr Samuelson last
visited India in November 2017 to participate at the Global Entrepreneurship
Summit.
8. Rs 1.10 lakh crore lost to bank frauds since 2015: RBI data
According to a data released by the RBI, over ₹1.10
lakh crore has been lost due to bank frauds since 2015. The number of such
frauds has gone up from 4,693 to 5,917 between 2015-16 and 2017-18.
9. IAF tested military aircraft using blended bio jet fuel
An An-32 transport aircraft of the Indian Air Force
(IAF) flew with blended bio-jet fuel produced from Jatropha oil, unlocking the
possibility of gradually expanding it to the entire service at some point. This
has the dual benefit of reducing the carbon footprint as well as usage of
fossil fuels. It was flown by highly qualified test pilots from the Aircraft
and System Testing Establishment (ASTE). The IAF intended to fly the An-32 with
10% bio-jet fuel at the Republic Day flypast on January 26, 2019. This bio-jet
fuel technology was developed by the Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP) under
the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in 2009 and tested
between 2011 and 2013.
10. Advocate Madhavi Divan appointed Additional Solicitor General in Supreme Court
With her appointment, Divan becomes only the third
woman to become an ASG (Additional Solicitor General) in the Supreme Court. The
Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment and Divan
will hold office till June 30, 2020. Senior advocate Indira Jaising was the
first woman to be appointed as the ASG, while the second one was Pinky Anand, who
still holds the post.
11. Telecom ministry announced that 5G services likely to be rolled out by August 2019
Department of Telecommunication (DoT) said it
expects to complete processes for 5G spectrum auction by August 2019 and the
services will be rolled out by 2020. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India
(TRAI) recommended auction of about 8,644 MHz of telecom frequencies at an
estimated total base price of Rs 4.9 lakh crore, which includes radio waves for
5G services. The roll out of 5G services in India will have an impact of USD 1
trillion on the economy.
12. TN CM inaugrated 35 civic projects
Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister Edappadi K.Palaniswami
inaugurated Chennai Corporation’s 35 civic projects various parts of the city.
The projects were implemented at a cost of Rs.22 crore. The projects include
parks, decentralized solid waste management projects, mobile diagnostic units,
garbage clearing equipment, new box culverts for flood mitigation and
facilities for persons with disability.
13. Union Cabinet changed law that Aadhaar not compulsory for banking, SIM cards
Aadhaar details for bank accounts or mobile phone
connections will no longer be mandatory as Union Cabinet approved an amendment
to the existing law, making Aadhaar details optional for these services. The
cabinet also cleared stringent penalties for hackers, and those responsible for
data breaches. The government’s move came after the Supreme Court struck down
Section 57 of the Aadhaar Act, which earlier allowed private entities to demand
the unique identity number before providing services. The Supreme Court on
September 26 had upheld the constitutional validity of Aadhaar.
14. India Announces $1.4 billion Package for Maldives, Agreements Signed
India announced a $1.4 billion package for the
Maldives to meet its immediate budgetary as well as some medium-term
requirements. The Maldives is weighed down by some $3 billion in debt to China
and the country is looking to India and Saudi Arabia, besides others, for help.
In November 2018, New Delhi had offered an immediate loan of $25 million to the
Maldives during a visit by its new foreign minister Abdullah Shahid. Here are 4
agreements that were signed during the state visit of Maldives President
Ibrahim Solih: 1. Agreement on the Facilitation of Visa Arrangements 2. MoU on
Cultural Cooperation 3. MoU for Establishing Mutual Cooperation to Improve the
Ecosystem for Agribusiness 4. Joint Declaration of Intent on Cooperation in the
field of Information & Communications Technology and Electronics.
15. United Arab Emriates President declares 2019 as Year of Tolerance
United Arab Emirates (UAE) President H.H. Sheikh
Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan has declared 2019 to be the “Year of Tolerance.” to
highlight UAE as the Global Capital of Tolerance, instilling the values of
co-existence and peace in local, regional and international communities The
Year of Tolerance will focus on “Five Pillars”. First one aims to deepen the
values of tolerance and co-existence among cultures and peoples by
concentrating on teaching the youth on the values of tolerance. The second
pillar will focus on solidifying the UAE as the global capital for tolerance,
via a series of projects with dialogue between various cultures and
civilizations The third will enact multiple cultural programmes and
contributions to build tolerant communities. The fourth pillar will see
legislative and policy-oriented objectives that contribute mandating cultural
and religious tolerance. The fifth pillar will promote tolerance and
co-existence through media initiatives.
16. Cyclonic storm Phethai struck Andhra Pradesh
Cyclone Phethai made a landfall at Katrenikona in
the East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh, with a wind speed of 80 kmph. The
cyclone caused huge damage to standing crops, especially paddy in East
Godavari, West Godavari, Krishna and Visakhapatnam districts. Cyclone Phethai
has crossed the Kakinada coast.
17. Centre suggested Presidents rule in J&K as governors rule comes to an end
Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik sent a
report to the central government recommending imposition of President’s rule in
the State. This is because the six month of governor’s rule is close to expiry
on December 19. The Union Cabinet has cleared the proposal to impose
President’s rule in Jammu and Kashmir from December 19. Now, President Ram Nath
Kovind will issue a proclamation declaring that the powers of the Legislature
of the State shall be exercisable by or under the authority of Parliament. The
State plunged into a political crisis in June this year after the Mehbooba
Mufti-led coalition government was reduced to a minority following withdrawal
of support by the 25-member BJP in the State.
18. Bhupesh Baghel Sworn in as Chhattisgarh third Chief Minister
Congress leader Bhupesh Baghel Sworn in as third
Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, at an indoor stadium Raipur, Capital of
Chhattisgarh. The Swearing-in Ceremony is administered by Governor Anandiben
Patel. Bhupesh Baghel Succeeds Raman Singh, who was the Chief Minister of
Chhatisgarh from 2003 to 2018. Two senior Congress leaders T.S. Singhdeo and
Tamradwaj Sahu also sworn in as cabinet ministers.
19. Kamal Nath sworn in as 18th Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh
Congress leader Kamal Nath,72 took oath as 18th
Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh after the 2018 Rajasthan Legislative Assembly
election at Kanpur, Madhya Pradesh. Governor Anandiben Patel administered the
oath of office of Kamal Nath.
20. NITI Aayog Organises the Third Edition of the Women Transforming India Awards
National Institution for Transforming India( NITI
AAYOG) organized the 3rd edition of the Women Transforming India Awards 2018
and launch the upgraded portal of the Women Entrepreneurship Platform 2.0. The
Vice President of India M.Venkaiah Naidu was the chief guest of the event where
he presented the awards and launched the portal. The theme of this year is
‘Women and Entrepreneurship’. 15 winners have been chosen through an extensive
six-month-long process. The primary objective of Women Entrepreneurship
Platform (WEP) is to promote and support both established and aspiring Indian
women entrepreneurs.
