1. Sri Lankan President named 30 member Cabinet
Sri Lanka’s President Maithripala Sirisena named a
30-member Cabinet, days after Ranil Wickremesinghe was reinstated as prime
minister following a lengthy political crisis. Mr.Sirisena reinstated Ranil
Wickremesinghe as Prime Minister after the Supreme Court threw out his attempt
to dissolve Parliament and hold early elections. The delay in the forming of
the Cabinet was due to the crippling seven-week power struggle with Prime
Minister.
2. 'Captain Marvel' named most anticipated film of 2019 by IMDb
Marvel Studios' upcoming film 'Captain Marvel' has
been named the most anticipated film of 2019 by the global film and TV website
IMDb. Marvel's 'Avengers: End Game' was second on the list, followed by Sophie
Turner starrer 'Dark Phoenix'. IMDb released its annual 'Most Anticipated
Movies of 2019' list, which is determined based on customers' page views.
3. U.S. Senate passes the First Step Act
The U.S. Senate passed the First Step Act, a
criminal justice reform Bill, that would roll back what are seen as excessively
punitive criminal justice policies that have been in place since the crackdown
on crime in the 1980s. The Bill benefits federally convicted individuals,
mostly serving drug offences. Major reforms include reducing the disparity in
how crack cocaine and powder cocaine offences are treated by federal law, the
differential treatment of the types of cocaine offences tends to be harsher on
African-American users. Some 2,000 federal offenders are likely to be impacted
by this. The leaders of the U.S. House expects the Bill to pass their chamber
so that President Trump can sign it into law.
4. Infosys appoints Airtels Nilanjan Roy as new CFO
Infosys Ltd has appointed Bharti Airtel Ltd’s global
CFO Nilanjan Roy as chief financial officer, effective 1 March 2019. He
replaces interim CFO Jayesh Sanghrajka, who will resume his responsibilities as
deputy CFO. Roy spent 13 years with Airtel, before which he worked for 15 years
with Unilever across their global operations.
5. Harsh Vardhan Shringla appointed new Indian Ambassador to US
Shringla, a 1984-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS)
diplomat will succeed Navtej Sarna. At present, Shringla is serving as Indian
High Commissioner to Bangladesh. Senior diplomat Riva Ganguly Das, presently
Director General of Indian Council for Cultural Relations, has been appointed
as new High Commissioner to Bangladesh.
6. United Nations General Assembly officially endorsed the International migration pact
The UN General Assembly voted on December 19 to
endorse the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration. The General
Assembly’s vote tally included 152 votes in favor, 12 abstentions, and five
votes against, which included the US. With a record 21.3 million refugees
globally, the United Nations began work on the non-binding pact after more than
1 million people arrived in Europe in 2015, many fleeing civil war in Syria and
poverty in Africa.
7. WV Raman appointed as the new coach of the India women's cricket team
Ex-Indian men's cricket team opener WV Raman has
been appointed as the coach of the Indian women's cricket team despite India's
2011 men's World Cup-winning coach Gary Kirsten being the first choice. Raman,
who played 11 Tests and 27 ODIs, is now one of the most qualified coaches in
the country. Raman is currently a batting consultant at the National Cricket
Academy in Bengaluru. From his cricketing days, Raman is best remembered for
being the first Indian to score a century in South Africa during the 1992-93
tour.
8. Centre seeks Rs.41,000 crore more to recapitalise the PSU banks
The Centre moved a proposal in Parliament for an
additional Rs.41,000 crore to recapitalise PSU banks, over and above the
already budgeted Rs.65,000 crore. At the beginning of 2018, a total amount of
Rs.65,000 crore was still remaining to be used. As of today, of that Rs.65,000
crore, Rs.41,000 crore is still remaining. And therefore, with this additional
Rs.41,000 crore, this year’s recapitalisation will be Rs.1,06,000 crore. So, if
the proposal gets approved by the House, this would take the total
recapitalisation package for the current financial year to Rs.1,06,000 crore.
The government also said the recognition of loans that are non-performing
assets (NPAs) was nearly complete and the recovery process was progressing
strongly, with Rs. 60,726 crore recovered in the first half of this financial
year.
9. Karnataka Cabinet approved a grant of Rs.8,037.87 crore for development works
The Karnataka State Cabinet approved a grant of
Rs.8,037.87 crore for the development works in the city under the Chief
Minister’s Nava Bengaluru Scheme. The funds will be released over the next
three years and the works will be executed by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara
Palike (BBMP). Nearly 40% of the total grant is for roadworks while the rest
will go towards lake development, solid waste management, land acquisition, and
various infrastructure projects. Of the Rs.8,037.87 crore, Chief Minister H.D.
Kumaraswamy had announced an allocation of Rs.2,500 crore in the Budget
presented in July 2018 for the 2018-19 fiscal. A total of Rs.2,200 crore will
now be allotted to the BBMP.
10. Karnataka Bank partnered with Paisabazaar.com to offer home loans to customers
Paisabazaar.com, online marketplace for financial
products and Karnataka Bank entered into a partnership to offer the bank’s home
loan product to customers on the Paisabazaar platform. Paisabazaar.com works
with 30 partners for its home loan product, which includes the country’s
biggest private and public banks and housing finance companies (HFCs).
11. Karavali Utsav to be inaugurated on 21st December in Mangaluru
The Karavali Utsav to be inaugurated on 21st
December in Mangaluru. A host of cultural activities are set to enthral people
during the festival. The district in-charge Minister U.T. Khader will
inaugurate the exhibition at a formal function at 6 p.m., music director
Gurukiran will inaugurate the festival at 6.30 p.m. at Karavali Grounds. Utsav
cultural committee president Narendra L. Nayak a variety of cultural programmes
are slated for nine days from Saturday at the Karavali Exhibition Grounds and
Kadri Park between 6 p.m. and 9.15 p.m. Cultural programmes, the main
attraction of the festival, will be organized at Karavali Grounds as well as
Kadri Park.
12. IRDAI fines Iffco Tokio, Royal Sundaram Rs 5 lakh each
The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority
of India (IRDAI) imposed fine of Rs 5 lakh each on Iffco Tokio General
Insurance and Royal Sundaram General Insurance for violating motor tariff
claims and file & use guidelines. IRDAI also informed the companies
violated File & Use guidelines and circulars issued by it from time to time
advising insurers that they shall continue to use the coverage, terms &
conditions, wordings, warranties, clauses and endorsements of the erstwhile
tariff of classes of insurance covers until further orders.
13. New Zealand to phase out plastic shopping bags from July 1,2019
New Zealand government announced regulations for
mandatory phase-out of single-use plastic shopping bags with effect from July
1, 2019. The phase-out will apply to all new plastic shopping bags with handles
that are made of plastic up to 70 microns in thickness.
14. India fifth-most deadliest place to be a journalist, Afghanistan worst: Reporters without Borders (RSF)
The annual worldwide round-up of deadly violence and
abusive treatment of journalists was released by Reporters without Borders
(RSF). According to the report, Journalists have never before been subjected to
as much violence and abusive treatment as in 2018. The figure increased by
eight percent to 80, and by 15 percent, in the category of number of
professional journalists killed, from 55 in 2017 to 63 in 2018. The numbers had
been declining for the previous 3 years.
15. Conrad K Sangma launched Meghalaya Health Insurance Scheme(MHIS-IV) merging it with Ayushman Bharat scheme
Chief Minister of Meghalaya Conrad K Sangma launched
the Meghalaya Health Insurance Scheme(MHIS-IV) in convergence with that of the
Centre’s Ayushman Bharat scheme. The MHIS-IV targets to cover more than 8 lakh
households offering over 2300 medical and surgical packages and up to Rs 5 lakh
per family.
