National News
1. Kannur International Airport In Kerala Begins Operations
- The Kannur international Airport-KIAL in Kerala began its operations with Union minister for civil aviation Suresh Prabhu and Kerala Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan jointly lighting the lamp inside the terminal building, marking the inauguration of the airport.
- Later the first flight from the Airport to Abu Dhabi was flagged off. With this, Kerala became the only state in the country with four international airports.
2. Allahabad University to be renamed as Prayagraj State University
- In October 2018, the Uttar Pradesh government had officially renamed Allahabad as Prayagraj. A formal proposal has now been sent to the state's Governor seeking his approval to rename Allahabad University as Prayagraj State University.
3. Railways launched new Buddhist Circuit Tourist Train
- Indian Railways flagged off the new Buddhist Circuit Tourist Train from New Delhi's Safdarjung Railway Station. The 12-coach train consists of a mini library, foot massager, touch-less taps and individual lockers, among others. The train will cover destinations associated with Lord Buddha's life, including Bodh Gaya, Varanasi, Lumbini, and will end with a tour of the Taj Mahal.
4. Indias first underwater museum to open off Puducherry coast in INS Cuddalore
- Indian Navy agreed to gift INS Cuddalore, a decommissioned Pondicherry-class vessel, to the Union territory of Puducherry for the creation of country’s first underwater museum. The 60 m long and 12 m wide vessel was decommissioned in March 2018 after sailing 13000 nautical miles. It would be sent to the seabed at a depth of 26 m and 7 km off the Pondicherry coast to act as an underwater marine museum for scuba diving and snorkeling activities.
5. Chennai airpot to be revamped for GIM 2019 says AAI
- The Global Investors Meet (GIM) 2019 is to be held in Chennai, India on January 23 and 24, 2019. The officials of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) have planned to spruce up the Chennai airport to give a facelift to a host of facilities.
- AAI has set up separate counters for e-visas, foreign passports and passengers having Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) passports. A special parking area will be created for the those coming to attend the GIM 2019. It has also decided to deploy additional manpower and put up some facilitation counters to help those arriving at the airport.
6. Centre notified amendments to the Citizenship Rules, 2009
- Union Home Ministry has notified amendments to the Citizenship Rules, 2009, to include a separate column in the citizenship form for applicants belonging to six minority communities from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh. Still, the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, is pending in Parliament. The Centre has made the changes under Section 18 of the Citizenship Act, 1955. The Ministry has notified new rules on December 3.
- Under the amendments, a separate entry in the form will ask the applicant, if they belong to one of the minority communities from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan - Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Parsis, Sikhs and Christians.

1. 1st International Conference on ‘Sustainable Water Management’ Held in Mohali
- The first International Conference on ‘Sustainable Water Management’ was held at Indian School of Business (ISB) in Mohali, Punjab. The conference was organized by Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) under the aegis of the National Hydrology Project of the Union Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation.
- The theme of the international conference is ‘Sustainable Water Management’. The inaugural session of the conference was attended by Himachal Pradesh Governor Acharya Devvrat, who was the chief guest of the event and UP Singh, Secretary at the Union Ministry of Water Resources, who was the guest of honour.
2. Donald Trump Names Heather Nauert As US Ambassador To United Nation
- US President Donald Trump nominated State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert as the US Ambassador to the United Nations. The former Fox News presenter’s appointment to the UN role will have to be approved by the US Senate. Nauert will replace Nikki Haley, who will be leaving the post by the end of 2018.

1. Mexico’s Vanessa Poncede Leon Wins Miss World 2018 Crown
- Mexico’s Vanessa Ponce de Leon won the coveted Miss World 2018 crown at a grand event held in the Chinese city, Sanya. Thailand’s Nicolene Pichapa Limsnukan was declared the runner-up.
- Former Miss World Manushi Chillar (India) presented the crown to the new winner during the pageant in which 118 contestants participated. India’s Anukreethy Vas failed to make a mark at the pageant as she could not even make it to the top 30.
2. Salman, Anurag Kashyap win at Asian Academy Creative Awards
- Salman Khan won the Best Entertainment Host for 'Bigg Boss', and Anurag Kashyap won the Best Direction [Fiction] for season one of 'Sacred Games' at the inaugural Asian Academy Creative Awards in Singapore. Other winners from India included Discovery Communications India, which got Best Comedy Programme for 'Queens Of Comedy' and Cartoon Network India's 'Lamput' won Best 2D Animated Programme.

1. CAD Widened To 2.9 % Of GDP In Q2
- Current account deficit (CAD) widened to 2.9% of GDP for the July-September quarter due to higher trade deficit compared with 1.1% during the same period of the previous year, according to the Reserve Bank of India.
- The deficit for the second quarter was $19.1 billion compared with $6.9 billion in the year-earlier period. The CAD for the April-June quarter was 2.4% of GDP or $15.9 billion.
2. SEBI Renamed ITP as ‘Innovators Growth Platform’
- In a major push to kickstart listing of start-ups in India in a big way, capital markets regulator SEBI has lined up a slew of relaxations for new-age ventures. The proposed changes include renaming the Institutional Trading Platform (ITP) that the regulator had created for such listings as Innovators Growth Platform (IGP).
- The changes include doing away with the requirement of at least 50% of pre-issue capital being held by qualified institutional investors.
3. PNB to sell 24 bad loan accounts to recover Rs 1,779 crore dues
- The accounts, whose e-bidding process will take place on December 21, are majorly concentrated in Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata zones of the lender. Punjab National Bank's (PNB) gross bad loans stood at ₹81,250 crore in the July-September quarter. The bank posted a staggering loss of Rs 4,532.35 crore for the second quarter of the current fiscal on rising bad loans.

1. Around 5,000 migratory birds flock in J&K's Gharana wetland
- Around 5,000 migratory birds have arrived at Gharana Wetland Conservation Reserve along the International border in the outskirts of Jammu. It is located about 30 km from Jammu, Gharana is surrounded by wetlands of Makwal, Kukdian, Abdullian and Pargwal where more than 170 resident and migratory bird species flock during the winter, making it a treat for bird watchers. These bird species are bar-headed geese, gadwalls, common teals, purple swamp hens, Indian moorhens, black-winged stilts, cormorants, egrets, and greenshanks.
2. Study says Bioplastics may not be a viable alternative to plastic
- Researchers at the University of Bonn in Germany found that Bioplastics, often promoted as a climate-friendly alternative to petroleum-based plastics, may lead to an increase in greenhouse gas emissions. But shifting to plant-based plastics could have less positive effects than expected.
- An increased consumption of bioplastics in the following years is likely to generate increased greenhouse gas emissions from cropland expansion on a global scale. Plastics cause fossil fuel depletion and climate change. It is estimated that by 2050, plastics could already be responsible for 15% of the global CO2 emissions.
- On the other hand, bioplastics are in principle climate-neutral since they are based on renewable raw materials such as maize, wheat, and sugarcane. These plants get the CO2 that they need from the air through their leaves. The study found that it takes a lot of time for the switch to bioplastics to pay off.

1. Atul Sahai Appointed CMD Of New India Assurance
- Atul Sahai has been appointed as the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of the country’s largest general insurance company New India Assurance. The post had been lying vacant since July 2018 after former chairman and managing director G Srinivasan retired.
- The appointments committee of the cabinet announced that Sahai who is the General Manager at Oriental Insurance will be appointed for a period of five years. Sahai’s name was recommended by the department of financial services after interviews were held for the position almost three months back.
2. RLSP Chief Upendra Kushwaha Quits As Union Minister
- Rashtriya Lok Samta Party (RLSP) Chief Upendra Kushwaha resigned as Union Minister of State in the Ministry of Human Resource Development. This comes a day ahead of the start of the Parliament’s Winter Session, triggering a realignment of political equations in Bihar.
3. Myntra’s CEO Ananth Narayanan Resigns
- Flipkart-owned Myntra’s CEO Ananth Narayanan has resigned from his role with his position set to be abolished. Flipkart’s Amar Nagaram has been given the responsibility to head Myntra. Key Myntra leaders such as Chief Revenue Officer Mithun Sundar and human resources head Manpreet Ratia have also resigned.
4. RBI Governor Urjit Patel Resigns
- A day before the results of polling in the five states, Reserve Bank of India governor Urjit Patel stepped down from his post. Patel, who cited “personal reasons” behind his decision, was in a conflict with the Union finance ministry over matters related to the monetary policy.
5. Shalindra Kumar is appointed as CEO of Jammu and Kashmir
- Shalindra Kumar will take over as the Chief Electoral Officer of Jammu and Kashmir on 12th December 2018. He will be replacing the incumbent Shaleen Kabra. His office will take effect a day after the completion of the ongoing nine-phased panchayat polls in the State.
- The panchayat elections in J&K is being held after a gap of seven years. The elections in the State began on November 17 and will culminate on December 11.

1. India To Retain Top Position In Remittances With USD 80 billion: World Bank
- India will retain its position as the world’s top recipient of remittances in 2018 with its diaspora sending a whopping USD 80 billion back home, according to the World Bank report.
- India is followed by China (USD 67 billion), Mexico and the Philippines (USD 34 billion each) and Egypt (USD 26 billion), according to the global lender. The Bank estimates that officially-recorded remittances to developing countries will increase by 10.8% to reach USD 528 billion in 2018.

1. INDRA NAVY: the bilateral maritime exercise between indian Navy and Russian Federation Navy exercises held in Visakhapatnam
- The 10th Edition of the bilateral exercise between the Indian Navy and Russian Federation Navy (RuFN) started at Visakhapatnam. The Maritime exercise will conclude on December 16. The Primary aim of the exercise is to increase interoperability amongst the two navies, develop common understanding and procedures for maritime security operations.
- This Year’s edition of exercise would be held in two phases, The Harbour phase would be held at Visakhapatnam from 9-12 December and the Sea phase would be held from 13-16 December in the bay of Bengal. Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW), Air Defence Drills, Surface firings, Visit Board Search and Seizure (VBSS) operations and tactical procedures will be the thrust of exercises at sea.

1. Khelo India Youth Games To Be Held In Pune
- Khelo India Youth Games-2019 will be held in Pune of Maharashtra in January. Sports Minister Col Rajyavardhan Rathore announced that 9000 youth will participate in this edition of the game.
- Under Khelo India programme, the government is providing scholarships to 1500 students from across the country. Last year around 3500 school children had participated in the event. In this edition of Khelo India Youth Games university players will also take part.
2. India's Prathamesh Maulingkar wins Mister Supranational 2018
- · A professional footballer, Prathamesh clinched the main title for India the very first time and was sashed by Gabriel Correa Mister Supranational 2017 and he received the trophy from Miss Supranational 2018 Valeria Vazquez.
- At the same pageant Mister Supranational Poland Jakub Kucner was adjudged first runner up. The second runner up title was won by Mister Supranational Brazil Samuel Costa.

1. Senior Journalist Jagdish Thakkar Passes Away
- Public Relations Officer (PRO) in the prime minister’s office and senior journalist Jagdish Thakkar passed away in New Delhi. Thakkar, 72, who was unwell for some time, passed away at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences.
