1. Former Mumbai Mayor and Padma Shri Nana Chudasama dies at 85

Born in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat, Chudasama was awarded Padma Shri in 2005 in recognition of his work in the social sector. He founded an NGO, Giants International, which has presence in several cities in India as well as abroad. Nana Chudasama carried out social work through his NGOs such as I Love Mumbai, the National Kidney Foundation and the Forum Against Drugs and AIDS.

2. India's Vedangi Kulkarni becomes fastest Asian to cycle the globe

Vedangi Kulkarni, a 20-year-old cyclist from Maharashtra's Pune, achieved the feat by completing the 29,000-km distance required to qualify as bicycling across the globe in 159 days. She reached Kolkata on December 23 after pedalling up to 300 km a day in 14 countries across the 159 days. British adventurer Jenny Graham (38) is the fastest woman to have cycled the globe in 124 days in 2018, which was three weeks faster than the previous record.

3. India, China hold 1st meeting on high-level people-to-people ties

External Affair Minister Sushma Swaraj and her Chinese counterpart Wang Yi co-chaired the first-ever meeting of India-China High-Level Mechanism on Cultural and People-to-People Exchanges in New Delhi. Both the countries agreed on '10 pillars' of cooperation to enhance cultural and people-to-people exchanges. These include - cultural exchanges, film and television cooperation and joint production, museums, sports, youth, tourism, state and city level exchanges, traditional medicine, yoga, and education. This mechanism is one of the outcomes of the Wuhan summit between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese Premier Xi Jinping this April.

4. India overtakes Germany to become seventh largest Stock Market

India's stock market has overtaken Germany's to become the seventh-largest in the world with a market capitalisation of $2.08 trillion. This is the first time in seven years that India moved past the equity market of Europe's largest economy, according to Bloomberg. At $27.07 trillion, US is world's biggest stock market, followed by China ($5.46 trillion) and Japan ($5.41 trillion).

5. South Indian Education Society award for Manmohan Singh

Former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh received South Indian Education Society (SIES) Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswati National Eminence Award as part of the Kanchi Mahaswami festival.He was awarded for his contribution to the field of public leadership. Professor Dr Manjul Bhargava, Niti Aayog member Dr V K Saraswat and Swami Chidanand Saraswati were awarded for their work in the fields of community leadership, science and technology and social thinkers, respectively.

6. NABCB Accreditation secures recognition in Asia- Pacific Region; 3rd one after Hong Kong and Mexico

India’s national accreditation body, the National Accreditation Board for Certification Bodies (NABCB), got recognition for its accreditation programme for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (OHSMS) Certification Bodies in Asia- Pacific region. It is the third accreditation body in the Asia Pacific Region to become internationally equivalent in the region, the other two being the accreditation bodies of Hong Kong and Mexico. It is a constituent Board of the Quality Council of India, is responsible for accreditation of certification/inspection bodies as per applicable international standards under an international system of equivalence. It has also signed the Multilateral Recognition Arrangement (MLA) of the Pacific Accreditation Cooperation (PAC) on 19 December 2018.

7. Mamata Banerjee awarded the Skoch Chief Minister of the Year 2018 Award

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has been chosen as the best chief minister of the country by the Skoch Group. The chief minister of Bangla was given the award on the basis of the State’s performance as measured on five parameters – governance, culture, finance, urban development and rural development. The state's Kanyashree scheme for the girl child has earned Banerjee much acclaim and the highest public service honour from the United Nations. In the field of agriculture, West Bengal has won five consecutive Krishi Karman awards and bagged the IPPAI Award for rural electrification in the state. Besides Banerjee the Skoch Group, has also awarded Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu with the 'SKOCH Sprinter of the Year' and Commerce and Industry and civil aviation minister Suresh Prabhu as the 'Steady Reformer'.

8. GDP inching up to 7.4% in FY20 and 7.2% in FY19: ICICI Bank

ICICI Bank projected the GDP to increase to 7.4% in 2019-20. Its growth forecast for FY2019 is at 7.2 mainly due to slow consumption. It states that one of the biggest factors restricting growth will be the real estate and small-scale units as they are yet to recover from the effects of GST and demonetization.

9. Indians stood at 12th rank in the misperception index

Indians placed at 12th rank in the “misperception index” according to the MORI Perils of Perception Survey 2018, done by Ipsos India, an independent market research company. It behind several countries like Italy, Singapore, Hong Kong, South Korea, Chile, and Argentina, among others. Thailand, Mexico, Turkey, Malaysia, and Brazil were ranked first in five and performed poorer than India. “misperception index” is based on questions which asked to people and it revealed the wide chasm between what people perceived and what was real.

11. GST Council cuts rates on 17 items, 6 services; rationalises 28% slab

The GST rate on cinema tickets above 100 was cut from 28% to 18% and on tickets up to 100 from 18% to 12%. Seven items that saw tax rates being slashed from the 28% bracket are: ♦ certain vehicle parts used in agriculture, ♦ monitors and TVs up to 32 inches, ♦ retreaded tyres, ♦ power banks, ♦ digital cameras, ♦ Video game consoles (all from 28% to 18%), and ♦ parts and accessories for the carriages for disabled persons (from 28% to 5%). Only 28 items remain in 28% slab.

12. Andhra, Himachal and Madhya Pradesh best performing states under maternity benefit programme PMMVY: MoSWCD

Minister of State for the Women and Child Development Ministry Virendra Kumar released the performance of states and UTs under the maternity benefit programme named Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana. Andhra Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh topped the charts as the best performing states. According to the finding, 51.70 lakh beneficiaries are covered annually under the PMMVY.

13. RBI shortlists TCS, Wipro, IBM, 3 others for setting up Public Credit Registry

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has shortlisted six IT majors including TCS, Wipro and IBM India to set up Public Credit Registry (PCR) for capturing details of borrowers and wilful defaulters. The other shortlisted companies are: ♦ Capgemini Technology Services India, ♦ Dun & Bradstreet Information Services India, and ♦ Mindtree.

14. India successfully test-fired Nuclear-Capable Agni-IV Missile

India on 23rd December successfully test-fired nuclear strategic ballistic missile Agni-IV from Dr Abdul Kalam Island off the Odisha coast as a part of user trial by the Army. The surface-to-surface missile has a 4,000-km strike range and is equipped with advanced avionics, 5th generation on board computer and distributed architecture. This is the seventh trial of Agni-IV missile.

15. Centre of Excellence for Genetic Blood Disorders at Prathima Institute in Karimnagar inaugurated by President of India

 President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind, on his first visit to Karimnagar, inaugurated the Centre of Excellence Genetic Blood Disorders at the Prathima Institute of Medical Sciences in Karimnagar, Telangana. This center will work on Sickle Cell Anaemia, Thalassemia and Other Genetic Blood Disorders.

16. Defence Minister Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman inaugurated Information Fusion Centre Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR) in Gurugram

Defence Minister Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman launched the Information Fusion Centre – Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR) at Information Management and Analysis Centre (IMAC) Gurugram. The IFC-IOR is aimed to engage with partner nations to develop maritime domain awareness and share information on vessels of interest in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). It would also help enhance maritime security and safety. The information exchange at the IFC-IOR would be initially undertaken by virtual means, using telephone calls, faxes, emails and video conferencing over the internet.
