1. ALIMCOs 6th Auxiliary Production unit and Limb Fitting Center inaugurated in Ballabhgarh, Faridabad

Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, Shri Krishan Pal Gurjar, attended the inaugural function of ALIMCO’s 6th Auxiliary Production Unit and State-of-the-Art Limb Fitting Center as the Chief Guest in Village Nawada, Tigaon, Ballabhgarh, Faridabad. The foundation stone for the establishment of a State-of-the-Art Rehabilitation Center was laid on June 16, 2018. For the establishment, Chief Minister Haryana approved approx. 5 Acre land at Village NawadaTigaon, Block Ballabhgarh, District Faridabad (Haryana) to ALIMCO at the lease rate of Rs. 1/- per Acre per year. This facility is equipped with high-end machines for providing best and quality service to the Persons with Disabilities (Divyangjans).

2. Hooda panel recommends creation of specialised information warfare units, restructuring of military intelligence

A single-member Hooda panel, set up by the Defence Ministry and the National Security Advisory Board (NSAB) recommended the creation of new specialized units for information warfare in areas where the counter-insurgency operations are being conducted. The panel which was set up by the government based on the recommendation of Defence Secretary Sanjay Mitra about five months ago was headed by former Northern Army Commander Lieutenant General (retired) DS Hooda who had overseen the surgical strikes conducted across the Line of Control (LoC) in 2016. He has recommended that the Army should set up the specialized information warfare units on an experimental basis and evolve them as per the output received from their operations besides restructuring of the cyber warfare operations. It has recommended that the Army and the Air Force should sort out their issues such as the ownership of attack helicopter and utilization of air defense assets which are common for both the services. He has also suggested scaling down the size of regular Army by about 20 percent and instead, having a reserve Army which can be called upon for war-fighting in case of conflicts.

3. Centre brings booklet on cyber safety for school children titled A Handbook for Students on cyber Safety

The Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India has released a booklet titled “A Handbook for Students on cyber Safety” to inform the school children about the different aspects of cyber safety. The booklet aims to create awareness among citizens especially students about cyber threats and provides details about the various safeguards that can be adopted by the children in order to protect themselves from cyber grooming.

4. India won 2 Tests in a series in Australia for 1st time after 40 years

India defeated Australia by 137 runs in the third Test at Melbourne to take a 2-1 lead in the four-match series. This is the first time since 1977-1978 that India have won two matches in a Test series in Australia. Further, the victory was India's 26th in 45 Test matches under Virat Kohli's captaincy.

5. ICC Test Rankings: New Zealand Overtake South Africa to Third Spot

New Zealand beat Sri Lanka by 423 runs to claim the Test series and jump above South Africa into the third spot in the ICC Test team rankings. India, who lead 2-1 after three Tests in Australia, are at the top of the rankings with 116 points. England are second with 108 points and Australia fifth on 102 points.

6. Bumrah becomes top wicket-taker in international cricket in 2018

India fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has become the highest wicket-taker in international cricket in 2018 after picking up 9 wickets in the Melbourne Test against Australia. The 25-year-old has taken 78 wickets this year, overtaking South Africa pacer Kagiso Rabada, who has taken 77 wickets. Bumrah took 48 wickets in Tests, 22 in ODIs and 8 in T20Is in 2018.

7. Delhi Police becomes first police force in India to digitise all malkhanas

With the launch of ‘E-Malkhana’ in the remaining 10 districts at Chinamaya Mission, the Delhi Police has become first in country to have digitalised malkhana in Police Stations of its all districts. Malkhanas are rooms for keeping seized arms and ammunition. According to the release, around 3,11,600 case properties have been encrypted in digital form across all the police stations in the state.

8. Sports Ministry embarks Rs 100 cr for funding athletes under TOPS

The Sports Ministry has earmarked Rs 100 crore for the funding of athletes under the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) for their preparations for 2020 Olympics, according to Sports Authority of India Director General Neelam Kapur. The TOPS, which was launched in September 2014, is a flagship programme of the sports ministry to provide financial assistance to potential Olympic medal winners. Athletes have also been given financial assistance to prepare for Commonwealth Games and Asian Games under the TOPS.

9. Archie Schiller, the seven-year-old was named as the co-captain of the Australian team

Cricket Australia have added seven-year-old Archie Schiller in the 15-member squad for the third Test of the series against India, at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Boxing Day, December 26. He was co-captain alongside Tim Paine. Archie Schiller, who has endured 13 heart operations and spent half of his life in hospital after being diagnosed with a life-threatening congenital disease, had the dream of captaining the Australian cricket team. 10. Heat stress scale Australian Open develops new extreme heat policy

Tennis Australia announced that a new “Heat Stress Scale” has been developed which takes into account air temperature, radiant heat, humidity and wind speed. The action was taken after complaints from players regarding the health and safety risks under the extreme heat of Melbourne, Australia. The new “Heat Stress Scale” will be used in during the Australian Open which will be held from 14th January 2019 to 27th January 2019 at Melbourne, Australia. The scale ranges from one to five and the play will be suspended if the heat stress scale reading is 5.0 or above.  A 10 minute break between the third and fourth set will also be given in men’s singles matches whenever the Heat Scale reading is 5 or more than 5.  

11. First test communication satellite of Hongyan constellation and six Yunhai-2 atmospheric environment research satellites were launched by China in its 297th Long March-2D rocket mission

China successfully sent six Yunhai-2 atmospheric environment research satellites and a test communication satellite of Hongyan constellation into orbit. They were launched by a Long March-2D rocket from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China. It was the 297th mission of the Long March rocket series. The six Yunhai-2 satellites will study atmospheric environment, monitor space environment, prevent and reduce disasters and conduct scientific experiments. The test satellite, the first for the constellation Hongyan, meaning “swan goose” in Chinese, will be used to verify the function of mobile communications in low earth orbit (LEO).

12. Banks recovered bad loans worth Rs 40,400 crore in 2017-18

The loans were recovered through channels like the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC), SARFAESI Act, Debt Recovery Tribunals and Lok Adalats. While banks recovered Rs 4,900 crore of bad loans through the IBC, the amount recovered through SARFAESI was Rs 26,500 crore in FY18.

13. Rahul Chhabra concurrently accredited as the next Ambassador of India to the Federal Republic of Somalia

 Rahul Chhabra who is presently the High Commissioner of India to the Republic of Kenya concurrently accredited as the next Ambassador of India to the Federal Republic of Somalia, with residence in Nairobi, Kenya. Rahul Chhabra, an IFS Officer of 1987 batch was appointed as the Ambassador of India to the Republic of Kenya on August 14, 2018.

14. PM Modi renamed 3 Andaman & Nicobar islands as tribute to Netaji

On December 30, 2018, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced renaming of three islands of Andaman and Nicobar archipelago as a tribute to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. The Ross Island was renamed as Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep, the Neil Island as Shaheed Dweep and the Havelock Island as Swaraj Dweep. On this day in 1943, Bose had suggested that Andaman and Nicobar Islands be renamed as Shahid and Swaraj Dweep respectively. In 1943 Netaji Bose unfurled the Tricolour in Andaman and Nicobar islands. Modi also hoisted a 150-feet-high national flag at Port Blair, besides paying floral tribute at Netaji's statue.

15. Y.K. Sailas Thangal concurrently accredited as the next Ambassador of India to the Republic of Liberia

Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Government of India announced that Mr. Y.K. Sailas Thangal who is the ambassador of India to the Republic of Cote d’ Ivoire has been concurrently accredited as the next Ambassador of India to the Republic of Liberia with residence in Abidjan. Y. K. Thangal, IFS Officer of 1996 batch was appointed as the Ambassador of India to Republic of Cote d’ Ivoire on 14th September 2018.

16. Keonjhar Police honours 10 Ashok Chakra recipients with postage stamps

Keonjhar Police, Odisha, in collaboration with India Post has issued 10 postage stamps, each featuring the Ashok Chakra Awardees from Police Department (State Police and Central police) across the country, under the “My Stamp” scheme. The stamps which are of Rs 5.00 denomination and have the background picture of Sun Temple, Konark, recognizes the acts of valour by khaki-clad personnel. “Ashok Chakra”, which is India’s highest peacetime gallantry medal with 84 awardees till date is equivalent to “Param-Veer Chakra“. The list of 10 police personnel named in postage stamp is as follows: Randhir Prasad Verma Pramod Kumar Satapathy Mohan Chand Sharma Tukaram Omble, Hemant Karkare, Kamlesh Kumari Yadav R. P. Diengdoh K Prasad Babu Vijay Salaskar, Ashok Kamte.
