1. India's first music museum to be set up in Thiruvaiyaru
The country’s first music museum will be set up with
assistance from the Central government in Thiruvaiyaru, Tamil Nadu, the birth
place of Saint Tyagaraja, one of the Trinities of Carnatic music. The other two
of the Trinity are Muthuswami Dikshitar and Syama Sastri. The Tyagaraja
Aaradhana Music Festival which is held annually in January in Thiruvaiyaru
attracts musical talents from all over the world.
2. RBI to soon introduce new Rs. 20 banknotes
Despite the new notes coming into circulation, the old
₹20
notes will not be withdrawn. According to the RBI data bank, there were 4.92
billion pieces of Rs. 20 note in circulation as on March 31, 2016. The number
more than doubled to about 10 billion pieces by March 2018. The central bank
has already issued new look currency notes in the denominations of Rs. 10, Rs.
50, Rs. 100, and Rs. 500. It had also introduced the Rs. 200 and Rs. 2,000 bank
notes. The new look notes are being introduced since November 2016 under
Mahatma Gandhi (New) series.
3. Rajnath Singh inaugurated over 150 projects in Lucknow
Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated as
many as 158 development projects in Lucknow on the 95th birth anniversary of
late Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He also laid the foundation stone for
418 development projects, making it to a total of 576 projects worth Rs 161
crore. Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had served as Member of
Parliament from Lucknow.
4. PM Modi inaugurated India's longest road-cum-rail bridge Bogibeel
Bogibeel Bridge in Assam's Dibrugarh is 4.94-km-long
bridge, which will connect the north and south banks of the Brahmaputra and
reduce travel time from Assam to Arunachal Pradesh to four hours. It has a
serviceable period of around 120 years. Assam Governor - Jagdish Mukhi and
Assam Chief Minister - Sarbananda Sonowal. While inaugurating the Bogibeel
bridge in May 2017, PM Narendra Modi dedicated it to the musician and
film-maker Bhupen Hazarika.
5. InSight lander places its first instrument (SEIS) on Mars
The US space agency National Aeronautics and Space
Administration (NASA) announced that its InSight lander has deployed its first
instrument Seismometer (SEIS) onto the surface of Mars, completing a major
mission milestone that will allow scientists to peer into the Martian interior
by studying ground motion also known as marsquakes. The Insight will deploy two
more instruments namely Rotation and Interior Structure Experiment (RISE) and
Heat Probe (HP3) to study Mars’ deep interiors.

The book “A Rural Manifesto – Realising India’s
Future through her Villages” authored by BJP MP Varun Gandhi was released in
Bengaluru. The book focuses on the challenges faced by farmers, laborers,
student, and teachers in villages across the country.
7. Indian Railways Bags 17 Awards For Energy Conservation
Indian Railways bagged 17 awards at the ‘National
Energy Conservation Awards (NECA) 2018’ held in New Delhi. Under ‘transport‘
category, Indian Railways obtained 10 awards for the subsector railway station.
Vidisha railway station in Madhya Pradesh won the first prize. Under ‘building‘
category, Indian Railways got three awards for subsector Railway hospitals.
Railway hospitals of Izzatnagar division won the first prize.
8. Union Minister Suresh Prabhu Confers Skoch Golden Jubilee Challenger Award
Commerce and Industry Minister Suresh Prabhu
conferred the Skoch Golden Jubilee Challenger Award at the 55th Skoch Summit in
New Delhi. The Skoch Challenger Awards are the highest independently instituted
civilian honors. The Commerce and Industry Minister was awarded for his
contribution to reforms, particularly in the power sector reforms. Other Awards
Conferred: 1. Skoch Chief Minister of the Year Award: Chief Minister of West
Bengal Mamata Banerjee. 2. SKOCH Sprinter of the Year: Andhra Pradesh Chief
Minister N Chandrababu Naidu.
9. Three States Among Best Performing States Under Maternity Benefit Programme: WCD
Andhra Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh
were the top three performing states under the maternity benefit programme
Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY). Minister of State for the Women
and Child Development Ministry Virendra Kumar stated PMMVY is a
centrally-sponsored scheme under which the cost-sharing ratio between the
Centre, states and the Union Territories with the legislation is 60:40. For the
eight northeastern states and the three Himalayan states it is 90:10, and 100
per cent central assistance for the Union Territories without the legislation.
10. China to contribute actively in Maharashtra development projects with tourism enhancing cultural ties
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis meets Wang Yi,
State Councilor and Minister of Foreign Affairs, People’s Republic of China,
last evening, in Mumbai. Both leaders discussed investment opportunities in
Maharashtra towards infrastructure, tourism development & enhancing
cultural ties. The State Councilor informed that Maharashtra will contribute to
the development of India China ties.
11. US and Turkey agreed on avoidance of power vacuum in Syria
US president Donald Trump and Turkish President
Tayyip Erdogan agreed to prevent a power vacuum in Syria after the pullout of
American forces. According to an official statement by Turkish Presidency, the
both of the leaders in a conversation yesterday, agreed to ensure coordination
between countries’ military and other officials to avoid a power vacuum which
could result into abuse of the withdrawal and transition phase in Syria.
12. Strong rupee pulls Rs 4,000 cr in capital markets via foreign investors
Indian Capital Markets have seen a good growing
graph this month as Foreign investors have pumped in nearly Rs 4,000 crore in
the Indian capital markets so far. This comes following a 10-month high net
inflow of over Rs 12,266 crore in the capital markets by Foreign Portfolio
Investors in November. According to data available with the depositories, FPIs
infused a net amount of Rs 1,332 crore in equities and Rs 2,552 crore in the
debt markets. Marketmen attribute the inflow to persistent fall in crude oil
prices. Another reason is the strengthening rupee against the dollar.
13. Belgium ends the year as No. 1 in FIFA global rankings
Belgium will end the year as No. 1 ahead of world
champions France in the global rankings released by FIFA recently. Belgium have
1,727 points by FIFA's calculations to 1,726 for France. Brazil are third on

14. Mithali, Harmanpreet retained as India captains for New Zealand tour
Mithali Raj and Harmanpreet Kaur were named as
Indian women's ODI and T20I captains respectively for the tour of New Zealand.
India will play three ODIs in New Zealand beginning January 24 as part of the
ICC Women’s Championship before playing three T20 Internationals.
15. Tokyo 2020 unveiled new budget, spending unchanged at USD 12bn
The new budget has kept the estimate unchanged at
1.35 trillion yen ($12.1 billion) from last year. The city government will
provide a further 600 billion yen and the national government 150 billion yen,
both unchanged from the previous version. Tokyo 2020 CEO - Toshiro Muto.
16. Maharashtra govt approved Rs 4,089 crore for Tembhu irrigation scheme
The scheme is about constructing barrages on the
river Krishna near Tembhu village and lifting 22 billion cubic feet water to
irrigate 80,000 hectare areas in seven talukas - Karad, Kadegaon, Tasgaon,
Khanapur, Atpadi, Kavathe-Mahankal and Sangola - spread across Satara, Sangli
and Solapur districts. The project was conceptualised way back in 1996 at a
cost of Rs 1,416 crore.
17. China launched first satellite for space-based broadband to rival Google
The satellite was launched from a Long March 11
carrier rocket from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in north-western China.
The satellite is the first in the Hongyun project planned by China Aerospace
Science and Industry Corp (CASIC). The Hongyun project, started in September
2016, aims to build a space-based communications network to provide broadband
internet connectivity to users around the world, especially those in the
underserved regions.
18. US Defence Secretary James Mattis resigned, Trump names Patrick Shanahan as acting Defence Secretary
Mattis had announced that he was quitting, effective
February 28, after falling out with Trump over his foreign policy, including
the decision to withdraw all troops from Syria. US President Donald Trump has
announced that Deputy Defence Secretary Patrick Shanahan would take over as the
acting Defence Secretary from January 1, replacing Jim Mattis two months
earlier than had been expected.
19. Manipur Assembly passed anti-mob violence bill
Manipur Assembly led by CM N Biren Singh passed the
'Manipur Protection from Mob Violence Bill' to reduce the number of mob
lynchings in the state. The bill recommends life imprisonment for those
involved in mob violence if it results in the death of a victim. The assembly
also passed the Manipur Goods and Services Tax (Amendment) Bill, 2018
unanimously.
20. Mission Indradhanush: Indias immunisation growth rate since launch rises to four per cent
In December 2014, Mission Indradhanush was launched
for a targeted approach to immunisation in India, in a bid to change the tardy
annual growth rate of 1 per cent. Between 2014 and 2018, India’s annual
immunisation growth rate has risen to 4 per cent, with an unprecedented 16 per
cent rise in the number of fully immunised children. The word Indradhanush was
chosen to represent the seven vaccines that were subsequently included in the
Universal Immunization Program against these seven diseases - tuberculosis,
poliomyelitis, hepatitis B, diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus and measles.
