1. India retained highest Aviation Safety Ranking: US Watchdog FAA

US regulator Federation of Aviation Administration (FAA) retained the highest aviation safety ranking for India. According to FAA, India’s International Aviation Safety Assessment (IASA) rating remains ‘Category 1’. This ranking was based on an audit of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) in July 2018.

2. Gas 2019: Mobile app for global aviation summit launched by Ministry of Aviation and AAI

Civil aviation ministry along with the Airport Authority of India (AAI) launched an app named ‘GAS 2019’. This app will enable users to interact with the co-delegates and speakers besides providing a platform for networking through personal and group chats. This was launched ahead of the global aviation summit to be held in Mumbai in January 2019. About the global summit: The Global Aviation Summit would take place on January 15-16, 2019 at Mumbai. The 2-day summit will be hosted by: The civil aviation ministry, AAI and FICCI.

3. Kabaddi World Cup Winning Captain Anup Kumar announced retirement

In his 15-year iconic career, Anup Kumar was part of the national team that won gold medals in 2010 and 2014. He won the Arjuna Award in 2012. He began his international career in 2006 at the South Asian Games in Sri Lanka and was the captain of the national team in 2014.

4. India, China hold first People-to-People Exchanges meeting

External Affair Minister Sushma and her Chinese counterpart Wang Yi will co-chair the first-ever meeting of India-China High-Level Mechanism on Cultural and People-to-People Exchanges in New Delhi.  India and China decided to set up people to people mechanism during the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit in China.

5. Govt to set up panel to look into tax issues faced by startups

The union government decided to set up an expert committee to look into all the taxation issues being faced by startups and angel investors.  The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) statement that no coercive action or measures to recover the demands of completed assessment under income tax would be taken" against such firms.  The committee of experts from IITs and IIMs will make recommendations on individual cases of recognized startups.  The notification of the committee formation will be issued by the DIPP shortly.

6. Lok Sabha passed Consumer Protection Bill

The Lok Sabha passed two Bills, the Consumer Protection Bill, 2018 and the National Trust for Welfare of Persons with Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Mental Retardation, and Multiple Disabilities (Amendment) Bill, 2018. The Consumer Protection Bill, 2018 seeks to replace the Consumer Protection Act, 1986. The Bill will become law once it goes through the Rajya Sabha. It is meant to protect those who use new technologies such as e-commerce and online shopping. The financial jurisdiction of the District Consumers Courts has been increased: they can deal with complaints involving Rs.1 crore as against the Rs.20 lakh earlier. Under the clause of product liability, a manufacturer will be liable to give compensation for products with defects.

7. South Korean grain silo enters Guinness World Records

A dreary grain silo that was transformed into an enormous colourful artwork in South Korea has been named by Guinness World Records as the largest outdoor mural in the world. The painting depicts a young boy’s journey into adulthood covers the outside of giant storage containers in the port city of Incheon takes up 23,688 sq m. The mural was commissioned by the city’s government and port authority. It aims at improving the negative view of aged industrial facilities. Twenty-two artists used more than 850,000 litres of paint to tell the story which reflects the seasons and resembles 16 individual book covers, at a cost of 550 million won.

8. Blind amphibian is named after US President Donald Trump

A newly-discovered blind amphibian from Panama is to be named after Donald Trump in recognition of the U.S. President’s stance on climate change. EnviroBuild, a U.K.-based sustainable building materials company, announced that it would be using Dermophis donaldtrumpi as the name for the amphibian with no legs and poor eyesight. The small creature is blind and has the ability to bury its head in the ground. Mr. Aidan Bell, the boss of the firm, said that these features of the amphibian match the U.S. leader’s opinion on climate change. Mr. Trump in June last year withdrew the U.S. from the Paris climate change agreement, which commits countries to keeping a limit on rising global temperatures.

9. Tata Motors partners with Zoomcar to deploy Tigor EVs in Pune

Tata Motors has partnered with self-drive rental car firm Zoomcar to offer the electric version of its compact sedan Tigor in Pune city as part of the shared mobility plans. Under the partnership, Zoomcar expects to deploy 500 electric vehicles in over 20 cities with Tata Motors in the next one year. Tata Motors is committed to the Centre’s vision of driving electric mobility in the country.

10. Researchers found Global warming causes feminisation of turtles

Researchers at the University of Exeter in the U.K. and the Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre in Portugal found that up to 93% of green turtle hatchlings could be female by 2100, as climate change causes “feminisation” of the species.  The figures are specific to the study site in Guinea-Bissau, West Africa. The sex of turtle hatchlings is determined by temperature, and at present about 52% of hatching green turtles, one of seven species of sea turtle, are female. It has been found that in warmer temperatures predicted by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change scenarios, 76-93% of hatchlings would be female.

11. Gujarat tops government's first-ever state startup rankings

Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) has awarded Gujarat as the best performer in Start-up Ranking 2018. Other states ranked top performers were Karnataka, Kerala, Odisha, and Rajasthan. The laggards in the list of performers, categorised as ‘beginners’ include Chandigarh, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Puducherry, Sikkim, and Tripura. ‘Emerging’ States, placed at a notch higher than the beginners include Assam, Delhi, Goa, Jammu & Kashmir, Maharashtra, Punjab, Tamil Nadu and Uttarakhand.

12. Qualcomm wins Apple case, could lead to iPhone ban in Germany

A German court found in favour of US chipmaker Qualcomm in a patent dispute case against Apple, which could lead to a ban on sales of iPhones in Germany. The ruling affects iPhone 7 through iPhone X models, which contain a particular component that violated a Qualcomm patent.

13. Nevada becomes 1st US state with female-majority Legislature

Twenty-three of the 42 available State Assembly seats will now be represented by a woman. This came after Clark County Commissioners appointed Rochelle Thuy Nguyen and Beatrice Angela Duran to Las Vegas-area legislative seats. With nine of the state’s 21 Senate seats also held by women, it means that 32 of the 63 total seats in the state legislature will be held by a female representative. It is the first time a state has seen that level of representation in US history.

14. Book 'Changing India' by Manmohan Singh Released

Titled 'Changing India', the five-volume book, published by Oxford University Press, the book is being described as a definitive expression of the former prime minister Manmohan Singh's perspectives on a wide range of economic, social and political issues as they evolved under his long and eventful career. The economist-turned-politician enjoyed a ten-year-long stint as prime minister, heading the UPA government at the Centre from 2004 to 2014.

15. First AC Local Train on Delhi-UP Towns Route From February

The MEMU (mainline electric multiple unit) train, having eight stainless-steel coaches, will cater to Uttar Pradesh cities within 200-300 km from Delhi. The Integral Coach Factory (ICF) will flag off the second air-conditioned 12-coach local train for the Mumbai suburban railways by December 31.
