1. Russia sends 2 nuclear-capable bombers to Venezuela
Russia has sent two Tu-160, strategic bombers
capable of carrying nuclear weapons, to Venezuela in an apparent show of
support to President Nicolás Maduro's regime. Russia is a major political ally
of Venezuela, which has become increasingly isolated in the world under growing
sanctions led by the United States and the European Union, which accuse Maduro
of undermining democratic institutions to hold onto power while overseeing an
economic and political crisis that is worse than the Great Depression.
2. RBI fined Indian Bank Rs 1 crore for cyber security violation
The RBI has imposed, by an order dated November 30,
2018, a monetary penalty of Rs 10 million on Indian Bank for contravention of
circular on Cyber Security Framework in banks. This penalty has been imposed in
exercise of powers vested in RBI under the provisions of... the Banking
Regulation Act, 1949 taking into account the failure of the bank to adhere to
the aforesaid guidelines and directions issued by RBI.
3. Commonwealth Games gold medallist Krishna Poonia becomes an MLA in Rajasthan
Discus thrower Krishna Poonia, the 2010 CWG gold
medallist and Congress candidate, won the Sadulpur assembly seat in Rajasthan,
defeating sitting BSP MLA Manoj Nyangali. It was Poonia’s second attempt to get
entry in the state legislature, having suffered defeat in the previous
elections.
4. Anushka, Kartik named India's Hottest Vegetarians by PETA
Actors Anushka Sharma and Kartik Aaryan have been
named India’s Hottest Vegetarians, according to votes on the official website
of People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India. Anushka Sharma is the
only woman to bag this title twice. She previously won in 2015. Rajkummar Rao,
Alia Bhatt were named India's Hottest Vegetarians by PETA last year.
5. Myanmar to grant visa-on-arrival to Indians
This comes as President Ram Nath Kovind is on an
official visit to Myanmar. Myanmar will provide visa-on-arrival to Indian
tourists entering the country through the international airports of Nay Pyi
Taw, Yangon and Mandalay to further people-to-people interactions. President
Kovind called Myanmar a key partner of India's 'Act East' and 'Neighbourhood
First' policies.
6. As many as 164 countries adopted first-ever global migration agreement in Morocco
The UN's Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and
Regular Migration aims to enhance international cooperation on migration
issues. The US, Australia, Austria, Chile, Hungary and Poland are among the
nations that have pulled out from the non-binding pact. It comprises 23
objectives for better management of migration at local, national, regional and
global levels.
7. Slain Journalist Khashoggi Named Time Magazines Person of the Year
Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who was murdered
in October 2018 at his country’s Istanbul consulate, has been named Time
magazine’s “Person of the Year” alongside several other journalists. The
magazine also honored Philippine journalist Maria Ressa, Reuters reporters Wa
Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo — currently imprisoned in Myanmar and the staff of the
Capital Gazette in Annapolis, Maryland, including five members killed in a June
shooting.
8. International Mountain Day observed on December 11
The Theme for the 2018 edition of the International
Mountain Day is: “#MountainsMatter”. It is celebrated by the Food and
Agriculture Organization (FAO) to spread awareness about the contribution of
mountains in the biodiversity as it consists of approximately a quarter of the
terrestrial biological diversity. To commemorate the day, there will be an IMD
side event on “Mountain adaptation: Vulnerable peaks and people” at UNFCCC
COP24 in Katowice, Poland.
9. Ex-SBI Chief Arundhati Bhattacharya appointed as SWIFT India Chairman
Arundhati Bhattacharya will be seen replacing Mavila
Vishwanathan Nair, the present Chairman of The Indian arm of SWIFT (Society for
Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication) SWIFT India Domestic Services,
whose term is going to end after five years. Arundhati Bhattacharya served
India’s largest bank by assets SBI as its 24th Chairman.
10. Shri Radha Mohan Singh launched a portal ENSURE- National Livestock Mission-EDEG developed by NABARD

Shri Radha Mohan Singh launched a portal ENSURE- National Livestock
Mission-EDEG developed by NABARD and operated under the Department of Animal
Husbandry, Dairying & Fisheries. Under the National Livestock Mission
component called Entrepreneurship Development and Employment Generation (EDEG),
subsidy payment for activities related to poultry, small ruminants, pigs, etc.
goes directly to the beneficiary’s account through Direct Benefits Transfer
(DBT). The NABARD developed an online portal “ENSURE”
(https://ensure.nabard.org), in order to make the process of DBT better,
simpler and transparent, so that the information related to beneficiary and
processing of the application can be made readily available.
11. Shaktikanta Das appointed as the new RBI Governor
Former economic affairs secretary Shaktikanta Das was
named the 25th governor of the Reserve Bank of India to succeed Urjit Patel,
who quit abruptly on December 10 amid a bitter dispute over the regulator’s
autonomy. The appointment will be for three years. He is a 1980 batch IAS
officer of the Tamil Nadu cadre and is currently a member of the Fifteenth
Finance Commission. Das also represents India at the G-20 in the role of a
sherpa.
12. Economist Surjit Bhalla resigned from PM Economic Advisory Council
Indian economist Surjit Bhalla announced his resigned
from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Economic Advisory Council (PMEAC). His
resignation is effective from December 1, 2018. After the resignation, he
joined the CNN IBN group.
13. Golden State Warriors Named Sports Illustrateds 2018 Sportsperson of the Year
NBA champion Golden State Warriors have been named
the 2018 Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year. The team will be
honored at the Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year Awards Show in Los
Angeles on December 11 2018.
14. TRS won the 119-member Telangana Assembly elections for second straight term
Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) has won 60 seats in
Telangana, while Congress is in second position with 13 seats. TRS chief K
Chandrashekar Rao won from his constituency Gajwel by 58,290 votes. Asauddin
Owaisi-led All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) won seven of the
eight seats it contested in the Telangana assembly polls.
15. Congress won Rajasthan Assembly Election 2018 with 99 seats
BJP has secured 73 seats in the 200-member state
assembly as compared to 163 in 2013 state Assembly elections. The Bahujan Samaj
Party won 6 seats, CPI(M) 2, Independents 13 and other parties got 6.
Meanwhile, 41-year-old Sachin Pilot and 67-year-old Ashok Gehlot are said to be
Congress' candidates for the Chief Ministerial post. Rajasthan Chief Minister
Vasundhara Raje submitted her resignation to Governor Kalyan Singh on December
11.
16. Congress beats BJP in Chhattisgarh Assembly elections after 15 years
Congress has secured the required majority in the
90-member Chhattisgarh Assembly and will form the government in the state for
the first time in 15 years. It has secured 47 seats so far, while the BJP,
which has been in power in the state since 2003, has won 10 seats. BJP chief
minister Raman Singh, who governed Chhattisgarh for 15 years, resigned. The
Congress will choose the state’s new chief minister at a meeting of its new
legislators.
17. Sascha Bajin, Naomi Osakas coach became first ever WTA Coach of the Year
Sascha Bajin, coach of the world number five Naomi
Osaka, became the first-ever recipient of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA)
Coach of the Year Award. Under his guidance, Osaka won her career first WTA
title at the Paribas Open (Indian Wells) and claimed her maiden Grand Slam
title at the US Open after defeating American tennis ace Serena Williams.
18. Congress emerged as the single largest party in Madhya Pradesh by securing 114 seats
As per the final results of Madhya Pradesh Assembly
election 2018 (230-seat Assembly) declared by the Election Commission after 24
hours of counting, the Congress won 114 seats while the ruling Bharatiya Janata
Party (BJP) won 109 seats. The Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has won
two seats and the Samajwadi Party (SP) has won one seat. ♦ MP Governor -

19. Jana Small Finance Bank Launches Jana Bankable Debit Card
Jana Small Finance Bank in association with the
Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) launched Jana Bankable Debit Card.
This card is designed for cricket fans who like deals and offers on online
shopping, gym membership, health & wellness products, food delivery, music
and travel on top brands like Snap Fitness, Snapdeal, Gaana.com, IXIGO, Myntra,
Crocs, Puma and GrowFit. The card comes with images of the top Indian
cricketers – Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni, Shikhar Dhawan, and Hardik Pandya. The Jana
Small Finance Bank is the official sponsor of BCCI for all the cricket matches
that are played in India.
20. Air Force Chief On 5 Day Visit to Japan
Air Force Chief
Birender Singh Dhanoa left on a five-day goodwill visit to Japan. During
his visit, Air Chief Marshal Dhanoa will call on Japanese Minister of Defence
Takeshi Iwaya, Chief of Staff of Japan Air Self Defence Force General Yoshinari
Marumo, Chief of Staff, Joint Staff Admiral Katsutoshi Kawano.
21. India and ADB Sign $31 Million Loan Agreement For Tamil Nadu
The Government of India and the Asian Development
Bank (ADB) signed in New Delhi a Loan Agreement for $31 million to build-up the
State Tourism Industry and boost visitor arrivals in Tamil Nadu. The
signatories to the tranche 4 loan for Infrastructure Development Investment
Program for Tourism (IDIPT) were Mr. Sameer Kumar Khare, Additional Secretary
(Fund Bank and ADB), Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, who
signed for the Government of India, and Mr. Kenichi Yokoyama, Country Director
for ADB in India, who signed for ADB.
22. Home Ministry Launches Twitter Account ‘@CyberDost’
Home
Ministry has launched a Twitter account named
‘@CyberDost’ to spread awareness about cybercrimes and normal
precautions to be taken. The Twitter handles is aimed at enhancing people’s
basic knowledge about cybercrimes and precautions to be taken for prevention.
23. PM Narendra Modi Inaugurates 4th Partners’ Forum in New Delhi
Prime
Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the fourth
Partners’ Forum in New Delhi. The objective of the conference is
to improve knowledge, alignment and accountability to accelerate action on
women’s, children’s and adolescents health. Ministry of Health
in association with the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health,
PMNCH is hosting the two-day international conference. This
is the second time India is hosting the Partners’ Forum. The programme has been
framed around the objectives of the Global Strategy of Survive – Thrive
– Transform.
24. Israel Becomes Permanent Member of Financial Action Task Force
Israel
became a full member of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF),
an international body set up to combat money laundering, terrorist financing
and other threats to the international financial system. The Jewish state has
now taken its place alongside 37 other members including most of the G20, the
world’s 20 leading industrialized and emerging economies just 16 years after
being blacklisted by the organization.
25. Portal ENSURE Launched by Agriculture Ministry
Union
Minister of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Radha Mohan Singh
launched a portal ‘ENSURE’- National Livestock Mission-EDEG
developed by NABARD and operated under the Department of Animal
Husbandry, Dairying & Fisheries. The NABARD has developed an online portal
“ENSURE” (ensure.nabard.org) so that the information related to beneficiary and
processing of the application can be made readily available.
26. EU Ambassador Opens India’s 1st CoE at MAHE
India’s
first Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence established by
the European Union was inaugurated at the Department of
European Studies (DES) at Manipal Academy of Higher Education in New Delhi
by Ambassador of the European Union (EU) to India and Bhutan, Tomasz Kozlowski.
The award comes with a grant of €1,00,000 to pursue India-EU interdisciplinary
studies in culture, literature, education and society. This is the fifth time that
MAHE has been awarded grants under the Erasmus+ Jean Monnet initiative.
27. Kamal Nath To Be New CM of Madhya Pradesh
Congress
party has chosen MP statue unit president Kamal Nath
as the chief minister of Madhya Pradesh. He will replace outgoing Chief
Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. A one-line resolution has been passed at the
Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting in Bhopal to choose the Madhya Pradesh
chief minister. Congress party high command will now take the final decision.
28. Mary Kom Honoured With ‘Meethoileima’ Title
Manipur Government honored AIBA World Women
Boxing Gold medalist MC Mary Kom with the title “Meethoileima”
(par excellent queen) at a function in Imphal, Manipur. On the
occasion, State Chief Minister N. Biren Singh handed over a cheque of
ten lakh rupees to her. The Chief Minister also declared that the
Imphal West DC Road towards Game Village will be named as MC Mary Kom Road.
